Riley dialed the phone as she got back to the barn putting the mare in a round pen. She hated to call the vet especially for a mare who wasn't going to like to be touched but this needed fixed. She glanced through the rails at the mares steadily bleeding leg. She winced a little and waited patiently for someone to answer.

Jim Castle was new at the Cobble Hill clinic, but he was settling in pretty quickly. His boss was pretty easy to work for and the tech staff was well trained. Moving to a new place had been the right move. He was still bitter about losing his house to the ex, but he wasn't sure he'd have wanted to stay and put up with all the small town gossip anyway. The other vet was on a farm visit and the only tech that wasn't on lunch break was out in the barn so when the phone rang, Jim was the one to get it. Cobble Hill Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Castle speaking.

Riley cleared her throat nervously. She always hated talking on the phone. "Yes this is Riley Carlson from Briarhurst Manor. I have a mare here who's in need of some medical assistance. Would you be avaliable to make a farm call. There is no way possible i could get her to the clinic." she bit her lip. it wasn't because the mares injuries were horrible but becuase the mare herself was untouchable she was a wild mare riley had just caught. She waited patiently for a response.

The caller was obviously female, but other than nerves, there wasn't much else Jim could tell from the voice. He wasn't very familiar with the horse owners around here though that would slowly change. "Let me check the schedule real quick." He rifled through some papers before finding the clipboard he was looking for. Nothing scheduled for the afternoon. "I can head right out ma'am. Can you give me a little idea of what to expect?" He had a well stocked truck, but there was a lot that could go wrong with a horse. A little preparation was always a good thing.

She eased a little her nervous settling. "Well the mare has a large gash down her front leg. It's pretty deep." she bit her lip again. "you may need some sedative. She's a little bit umm.." she tried to sugar coat it until he arrive mainly because she didn't want him to be scared off. "headstrong." she cleared her throat again. "thanks again. I'm out behind the barns in the roundpen so you can just pull around." she sighed lightly now just to get the mare caught and haltered.

Hmmm. Gash in the foreleg could be as simple as some stitching or as complicated as surgery on a tendon. He would have to wait and see. He would undoubtedly need sedative for such a wound and it sounded like this horse was a real headcase. Lovely. Well, he'd known from the beginning that equine medicine was no cakewalk. And he would never turn down a client based on the behavior of a horse. There were plenty of sedation techniques that meant he'd never have to work with a crazy animal while it was awake. "No problem, we'll take things as they come." He checked his watch. He was very familiar with Briarhurst Manor as he boarded his own gelding there. "I'll be there in fifteen."

Jim set the phone back in its cradle and headed back to the storage closet. He had everything he would need in his truck, but he wanted to grab some extra vet wrap just in case. He grabbed another couple rolls of gauze too. Better too much than not enough. He paused as he was closing the closet door. Riley Carlson. The name had been familiar because he was pretty sure she wasn't just from Briarhurst, she owned it. He made all of the arrangements for boarding his gelding through the stable manager, but he had heard the owner's name mentioned a couple times. Huh. He double checked his pockets for the truck keys he was forever misplacing and headed out to the red Chevy he used for rounds. ---FINISHED---
