How's it going?" A broad smile was almost always on Kayden's face when she was at the barn, and this morning it was no different. Her voice was soft as she greeted her horse, sliding the stall door open to reveal the dapple grey gelding, his ears perked toward her as she stepped into the box stall, running a hand down his neck gently. "I'm gonna let you run today..." She smiled and scratched his forehead as she spoke to him, watching him. It had been a while since she had let him run- really run. She was always holding him back, maing him focus on precision, not speed, but every now and again she liked to take him out on the track and just let him go, let him fly like the earth didn't exist anymore, and there was nothing holding them back. It was exhilarating. For them both. Kay slid the blue, rope halter onto Cole and led him down the aisle to the cross-ties so she could brush him up and tack him up. She hummed quietly to herself and to Cole as she brushed him, meticulously making sure to get every speck of dirt off of him, taking her time with each step- Curry, hard brush, Soft brush. Wait, where was her soft brush? She pulled everything out of her brush bucket, but there was no sign of it. Had she dropped it? She retraced her steps. Nope. She went back to Cole, "Huh. That's weird. I don't know where it could have gone." She looked around to see if it had been put anywhere, but didn't see it. She'd have to ask someone, but she hadn't really seen anyone around either. Then again, it was really early on a Saturday. You never knew when people would start showing up.

The soft leather under his rough hands felt smooth and polished, the dark nylon rope slung across his broad shoulder. His footsteps echoed down the hall of the barn, the ears of the horses stood forward in anticipation of his coming. On the docket today was the spry young stallion that was the newest addition to Steadfast. Captain; Sleek, black, and as swift as retribution on judgment day. He was a shadow lurking in the back of his stall, but upon the jingling on the halter he leaped forward and stretched his nose over the stall door to Fin, snorting roughly. The halter fitted over Captain's nose and behind his ears, Finn led him down the barn hall, unhooking a gelding from the cross ties to lead the Thoroughbred past. As he walked passed, he gently placed a soft brush on the rump of the gelding, then re hooked the crosstie. The brush had been laying beside a clump of hay near the tackroom. "Good morning, Kayden " The sun was barely peeking over the pines, swallows swooped across the barnyard and perched in the barn rafters. Their flight agitated Captain, he tossed his head and danced to the side in protest to their acrobatics. Finn ran his hand across Captain's dark sinewy neck, soothing his nerves. "Early bird like me, are you?" Finn remarked as he scraped clumped sawdust from Captain's hooves, but as he glanced in the direction on the young girl, his eyes found nobody. Except the gelding. Odd. He straightened, looking over the dappled back of the horse in the aisle with a puzzled look on his face.

She went to try and find the brush, checking by her mare, Sissy’s stall. Nope. Not there. She went back to her gelding again, and saw the brush on his rump. She grabbed it quickly and started to brush Cole. She looked over at Finn, and realized she thought she had heard him say something. “Oh, I’m sorry. Did you say something? I was distracted, trying to find my brush.” She looked around the gelding’s neck to see Finn, “Thanks, by the way. I’m assuming you found it?” She started to brush Cole again, watching over his back as Finn brushed Captain. When she had finished, she put the brush back in her brush bucket and then put it back in the tack room and grabbed her saddle, bridle, and leg wraps, along with a martingale and bell boots. She took them and put them on the saddle stand by her gelding in the cross ties, putting the leg wraps and bell boots on first, then working her way up from there. She put the saddle on and then tied Cole’s tail in a mud knot so that it wouldn’t get tangled while she worked him on the track. Kayden looked up at Finn, “What’re you going to work with Captain on today, Finn?”

The cotton pad was stark white against the slick black back of the stallion, though the cut foam support was tainted slightly brown from the oil and polish seeping through the saddle's leather over many years. The leather groaned softly as he tightened the girth another notch, and jingled as he guided the bit between Captain's teeth. " Thought about doing some flat track training, but I think I'll head to the cross country course" Finn checked the leg wraps, and readjusted one before pushing his gearbox to the side of the barn. " Figure I'll take him down to the river to cool off afterward " He clutched the reins and a handful of Captain's mane, hoisting himself up into the saddle. The Thoroughbred sidestepped, tossing his head upward, snorting roughly, and kicking a few pebbles of gravel toward the paddocks, which startled a couple mares. Finn ignored his antics; he'd ridden too many colts to be flustered by the horses' protests. " I'd ask if you cared to join me, but it looks as if you're headed to the track, are you not? "

I was thinking of working some Cross Country with Cole, but I thought he really needed a good run. Maybe I'll ride him out to the river afterwards though. That's sounds like something he'd enjoy." She unclipped the cross ties and took off the halter, slipping the bridle onto Cole's head, him taking the bit easily. She unclipped the reins and switched them out for split reins, pushing her brush box off to the side and leading the gelding out of the cross ties and into the isle. She grabbed her helmet off the hook at the end of the crossties and snapped it on, before pulling her stirrups down and grabbing a handful of the geldings mane before swinging herself up into the saddle. She rode behind Finn, being sure to give Captain some extra space since he seemed a bit antsy this morning. "Have fun out on the cross country trails, unless you wanted to join me on the track? the invitation's there, and Cole would love a little competition to run against. Even if he would lose." She smiled. In a long distance run, Cole would win since he was built for endurance, but a short race? Captain would have the advantage.
